Our Story
Black Youth Connected began in response to the reality that York Region is vast, and many schools have a small population of Black students. While school boards have made efforts to bring students together through seminars and workshops, there have been limited opportunities for Black youth to connect in ways that feel organic, celebratory, and fun.
We wanted to change that.
Black Youth Connected was created to intentionally build community, bringing Black youth together across York Region to create spaces rooted in belonging, celebration, and connection. What started as a grassroots effort to bridge that gap has grown into a youth-centered initiative focused on meaningful social experiences.
Our signature semi-formal fondly called the “Black Semi” by the youth, is now in it's third year. The semi brings together approximately 150 Black youth annually, a testament to the need for spaces intentionally created for connection and joy.
Upcoming Events
Crowned in Culture provides culturally affirming spaces that aren’t typically offered through school events. Students can enjoy eating and drinking foods like jerk chicken and sorrel, and listening to music like soca and afro beats, a little something for everyone. It’s a space where students can celebrate their identity, connect with peers, and be in an environment where they see themselves reflected, feel affirmed, and are surrounded by people who share their culture.
"Black semi was amazing! I can't wait until next year!!!"
